  • Only one landing tour to Skellig Michael operates per day, subject to weather conditions, sea state, landing permit availability, and official opening arrangements.
  • Opening arrangements are variable and dependent on weather conditions. When the site is not officially open or staffed, landings and visits are prohibited.
  • Advance booking is strongly recommended, as landing places are strictly limited and controlled by the Office of Public Works (OPW) and relevant maritime authorities.
  • All sailings and landings are subject to weather, sea conditions, safety considerations, and operational constraints.
  • Sailings may be cancelled or altered due to circumstances beyond our control, including but not limited to weather conditions, sea state, safety concerns, or regulatory requirements.
  • The Skipper’s decision is final regarding sailing, landing, delays, or cancellation and is made at all times in the interest of passenger safety.
  • The average length of visit on Skellig Michael is approximately 2.5 hours, excluding the boat journey.
  • Time ashore may be reduced due to weather conditions, sea state, or operational requirements.
  • The tour price per person is clearly displayed at the time of booking and includes all applicable charges, excluding any optional extras.
  • deposit is payable at the time of booking, with the remaining balance payable on the day of travel.
  • Accepted payment methods will be confirmed during the booking process.
  • There is a 5% Booking & Administration Fee.
  • This fee is non-refundable under all circumstances, including cancellation by the customer, weather disruption, or operational changes.
  • Departure times operate on a weekly rota system and may vary.
  • Customers will be informed of their confirmed departure time closer to the date of sailing.
  • It is the customer’s responsibility to arrive at the correct departure location at the specified time.
  • Customers must arrive at Portmagee Marina at least 30 minutes prior to departure.
  • Late arrivals cannot be accommodated, and refunds will not be provided.
  • Departure times may change due to operational or safety requirements. Customers will be notified where possible.
  • Skellig Michael is a remote and exposed site.
  • A visit to the monastery involves a climb of 618 steep and uneven stone steps, ascending over 600 ft (180 metres).
  • This is a physically demanding climb, and each visitor is personally responsible for assessing their own fitness and health before attempting it.
  • Persons with medical conditions, mobility issues, or health concerns should carefully consider their ability to safely undertake the climb.
  • Visitors must remain on recognised pathways at all times.
  • Children under the age of 12 are not permitted to land on Skellig Michael.
  • Visitors must follow the instructions of OPW Guide Staff and boat crew at all times.

Visitors should be aware of natural hazards, including:

  • Falling rocks
  • Steep gradients
  • Uneven steps
  • Slippery surfaces, particularly when wet
  • Visitors are strongly advised to carry drinking water and to wear appropriate protective clothing suitable for rapidly changing weather conditions.
  • Appropriate footwear with good grip is mandatory.

Recommended footwear includes:

  • Closed-toe shoes with good grip
  • Hiking boots
  • Trainers / sneakers with treaded soles

The following footwear is not permitted:

  • Sandals
  • Flip-flops
  • Crocs
  • Pumps
  • Heeled shoes or wedges
  • Dress shoes
  • Smooth-soled footwear
  • Bare feet
  • Visitors may be refused permission to climb the steps if, in the judgement of the Skipper or OPW staff, their footwear, fitness level, or condition presents a safety risk.
  • No animals are permitted on Skellig Michael.
  • Skellig Michael is a highly vulnerable heritage site, and visitors must fully cooperate with all measures in place to protect and preserve the monument.
  • By proceeding with a booking, customers confirm that they have read, understood, and agreed to all Terms & Conditions associated with the tour.

Itinerary for the Landing Cruise

  • Customers will meet at Portmagee Marina, where they will check in with the crew prior to boarding.
  • Following boarding, the vessel will depart Portmagee and proceed towards the Skellig Islands, subject to prevailing weather and sea conditions.
  • During the crossing, passengers may experience variable sea conditions typical of an open Atlantic environment.
  • A toilet is available on board the vessel for passenger use during the journey.
  • Upon arrival at Skellig Michael, and subject to landing conditions and OPW approval, passengers will disembark and proceed onto the Island under the direction of the boat crew and OPW Guide Staff.
  • Toilet facilities are available on Skellig Michael; these are the only facilities on the Island. No additional amenities or services are provided.
  • Once on the Island, visitors may explore the areas designated as open by the OPW and must comply with all instructions provided by OPW Guide Staff.
  • Access to the monastery steps is subject to conditions on the day, visitor capability, footwear compliance, and OPW and skipper assessment.
  • Time spent on the Island is approximately 2.5 hours, excluding the boat journey.
    This duration is indicative only and may be reduced or extended at the discretion of the Skipper or OPW due to operational, weather, or safety considerations.
  • Visitors must return to the designated embarkation point at the time instructed by the crew or OPW staff.
  • The return journey to Portmagee will commence at the designated time, and arrival times may vary depending on sea and weather conditions.
  • This itinerary is indicative only and may be altered at short notice in the interests of safety, compliance, or operational necessity.
